An exhibition curated by musician Alison Goldfrapp opens at the Lowry in Salford later this month. It’s the first exhibition in the gallery’s Performer as Creator series and features works selected by Goldfrapp from art collections worldwide.
Alison Goldfrapp was born in London and studied fine art at Middlesex Polytechnic. During the mid 90’s she collaborated with Orbital and Tricky before meeting Will Gregory in 1999 and forming Goldfrapp. Their debut album Felt Mountain was released a year later in 2000.
I saw Goldfrapp perform in Brighton in 2005 when I was heavily pregnant with my son. Dancers paraded onstage wearing giant horse heads whilst Alison rocked out in a bright, bejewelled batwing kaftan. I love her unique style, she has the eye. Who else could pull off a Pierrot costume with such aplomb?
The exhibition promises to portray her fascination with the darker side of folklore and fairy tales. I can’t wait.
