Did you know you can cycle the length of France’s Atlantic Coast? There are some beautiful cycle trails heading south down the Medoc coast round the Bay of Arachon and further south through the Landes Forest. The Landes offers 154km of cycle track or piste de velo, including many off road cycle tracks through the beautiful forest close to the wild Atlantic coast. As much of the land has been reclaimed from marshland it is flat and easy to cycle. The cycle tracks are well tarmaced and during the season are used regularly by families and groups of young people who cycle and camp their way along the coast.
I cycle most days when I stay with my friend at a campsite at Labenne Ocean, taking the bike 10km through the forest to nearby Cap Breton. I’ve just booked our flights to Biarritz for this year and I can’t wait to get back on the bike, its such a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way of exploring the region. I find it strangely meditative pedalling along in the forest listening to the the sound of the crickets and the waves break close-by. One of my favourite memories was when my son was sat in a child seat on the back of my bike quietly singing nursery rhymes as we peddled along through the forest in the early evening sun, I felt so happy and so free.
